OUR STORY & PHILOSOPHY
Hi, I'm Nathan Savory, a developing master craftsman, with expertise in woodturning and laser cutting.
Based in the English Lake District, Noble Roots crosses genres, taking craftsmanship into the modern era, yet preserving its innate heritage. Along with my wife Amanda, we are Noble Roots.
My journey starts in childhood, playing in the local woods, making dens and camping out overnight with friends. It was in these moments that I fell in love with woodlands. They have a varied nature that just begs to be explored. Different sights and smells, different trees with different properties. Some more beautiful than others, whilst others were more useful (in size or position) for our adventures together.
After school I moved to Newcastleton in the Scottish Borders, to become an outdoor instructor. It was here that I could teach others how to explore and utilise the forest for fun, function or moments of peace and tranquillity. After a few years as an instructor I moved over to the maintenance team. My training for how to create long lasting wooden items now began.
In this role I began to understand that wood wasn't just wood. Wood from different trees had different properties and as such were best suited for different projects. Sometimes wood was selected for its strength, sometimes for it's weather resistance and sometimes for its aesthetics. My eyes were opened to the seemingly unlimited scope of usage that this material could provide.
Jumping ahead, I moved further north to Lossiemouth to become a laser technician, running nine different laser cutting machines to produce post card sized gifts. I started to recognise the possibility of creating not just functional items, but items that were valued and treasured, that brought a smile to peoples faces and brought back memories when ever they were seen.
At the end of 2020, now married to Amanda, we moved down to the Lake District, between Kendal and Windermere. It was here that I applied for a woodturning apprenticeship position at a prestigious local furniture makers company. I was now able to combine all my previous knowledge, with the final piece of the puzzle - creating beautiful pieces that were designed and crafted to last for generations. Quality, visual appeal and efficiency of production were the driving forces and I learnt a lot in a short amount of time.
After receiving a bursary
Every piece tells a story. My multi-layered skillset spans many medium, resulting in truly memorable, unique pieces that stand the test of time. The timeless heritage from the masters of these crafts deserve to be continued into our modern day.
Each project is approached with the same care, precision and attention to detail, whether it's bespoke in nature or a signature piece.
In 2022 I was awarded a bursary by the Worshipful Company of Turners to cover the costs of some training on my woodturning journey.
In 2023 I was invited to be a Yeoman of the Worshipful Company of Turners.
In September 2023 I moved my workshop to Brougham Hall, Penrith.
At the end of October 2025 we moved out of Brougham Hall in anticipation of moving into a home workshop. Watch this space for updates!
I'm a member of the Register of Professional Turners.
